“Eskimo King”

April 4, 2007

An Eskimo made an igloo there
It survived a hurricane
The caribou would stop and sing
The spotted owls flapped their wings
And when it melted in the spring
He bivouaced out in the trees
And waited for the ice to freeze
And didnt ask for anything
Except his little white feet
He limped when they began to bleed
The footprints were unfaltering
Later lines of dragging knees
Eating earth like sinking teeth
Bear paws padded bloody meat
Wolves paced far and patiently
Watched the man and bit at fleas
The summer came and suddenly
He was confronted by the sea
The sacred place where prior kings
Had made a charm for piety
An artifact he now could see
A hand erected on the beach
In its palm he found a seat
And gestured at infinity
Silently the thing agreed
And there they sat in harmony
